Why we love it

What makes this place memorable is its relationship with the canal. Wharfinger’s Cottage sits right on the water’s edge, with a lawn that borders the towpath and a long, lived-in sense of history that still shapes the mood of the house. Inside, the old bones remain: thick walls, a vaulted pantry below ground, rooms made for gathering and corners that invite retreat. Upstairs, the view opens towards the mountains, so the whole stay seems to hold both stillness and adventure at once.

About the Property

Once home to the wharf manager, this Grade II listed cottage has been carefully reworked into a stay that feels grounded rather than polished out of character. The layout unfolds across three floors, giving it the pleasing sense of an old house that has grown over time. There are sociable rooms for long meals and evenings by the fire, but also quieter spaces to peel away with a book. Outside, the experience is shaped by water and greenery: a lawn along the canal, a rear garden rising in terraces, and places to sit that catch different moods of the day. It suits guests who want to walk the hills, then return to somewhere with a little history in the walls.

Location

Llanfoist, Abergavenny

This is a particularly rewarding corner of the Brecon Beacons, where canal paths, market-town rhythms and mountain routes all meet. Abergavenny brings good food, independent shops and an easy sense of local life, while the Black Mountains rise just beyond with walking that ranges from gentle to properly leg-stretching. The Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal lends the landscape a slower pace, ideal for waterside strolls and unhurried afternoons. It’s a part of South Wales that feels varied without ever being showy: green, generous and made for people who like to spend as much time outside as in.
