Why we love it
Bankside Cottage earns its place for one simple reason: the setting. Tucked into Milldale, one of the Peak District’s most charming limestone hamlets, it gives you that rare sense of being properly folded into the landscape. Step outside and the day begins with the valley, the river and the footpaths, then ends back at the cottage with the warmth of old stone walls and a fire lit against the evening chill.

About the Property
This is a traditional detached stone cottage with the easy, settled feel of somewhere that has been carefully looked after rather than styled for effect. Inside, there are beamed ceilings, a cosy sitting room and an open range fire that makes cooler months especially inviting. The kitchen centres around an Everhot, adding a gentle background warmth that suits long, unhurried mornings. Outside, an enclosed garden gives you space for lunch in the fresh air after a walk, while the bikes are a thoughtful touch for exploring the lanes and valley at a slower pace. It is also a good choice for those bringing a dog, particularly with so much walking country on the doorstep.
Location
Milldale, Peak District
Milldale is one of those Peak District places that feels quietly timeless: a small limestone hamlet in the Dove Valley, with the river, stone bridges and steep green sides doing most of the talking. It’s a wonderful base for walking, particularly along Dovedale and the traffic-free trails that thread through this softer, more pastoral side of the National Park. Ashbourne is close enough for provisions and a little market-town browsing, but the real appeal here is the rhythm of the landscape itself — walking boots by day, pub fires and dark skies by night.
