PickWell Barton is a former coachman’s cottage dating from the 1840s, now thoughtfully kept as a relaxed coastal base with the character of an old Devon farm building still intact. Original beams and a generous, family-minded layout give it warmth rather than polish, and the private courtyard setting adds a feeling of seclusion. Days here naturally fall into a simple pattern: beach walks, salty swims and long afternoons out, followed by evenings by the woodburner or supper in the enclosed garden. The old stables have been turned into a games room, which makes the place especially easy for families, while the wider setting — a working sheep farm above the coast — gives the whole stay a real sense of place.

This part of North Devon has a softer, more spacious feel than some of the county’s busier seaside spots. PickWell Barton sits above Putsborough Beach, where broad sands and open views give the coast a wonderfully unfussy beauty. From here, it’s easy to tap into the landscape that draws people back year after year: long beach days, cliff walks, rolling farmland and the shifting light of the Atlantic. Nearby Braunton brings useful local life, while the wider coastline towards Woolacombe and Croyde offers some of the county’s most memorable sea-and-sky scenery.
