Part of the Fingals estate near Dittisham, Barberry Brook is a small, characterful retreat with a surprisingly immersive relationship to its surroundings. The most memorable moments happen upstairs, where the bedroom opens to a balcony above the brook and a bath is positioned to make the view part of the ritual. The architecture is modern and airy, with generous glazing, timber beams and a calm palette that keeps the focus on light, water and trees. Though quietly romantic, it does not feel stage-managed; there is an ease to the place that suits unhurried weekends, muddy dog walks and long evenings spent listening to the stream. Dittisham sits in one of the prettiest corners of the South Hams, where wooded creek edges, winding lanes and the tidal Dart give the landscape its soft, unhurried rhythm. This is a part of Devon for pottering rather than rushing: estuary villages, old pubs, gardened hillsides and a coastline that shifts between sheltered coves and open sea. From here, days can move easily between river walks, boat trips, long lunches and excursions to nearby market towns and beaches. It is an especially good base for anyone drawn to South Devon’s gentler, greener side.
