Why we love it
Sheriff Lodge earns its place for the way it pairs a sense of calm with a strong feeling of place: an old hillside house looking out over the Derwent Valley, where mornings begin above the town and the Peak District feels immediately close. It has the ease and personal warmth of a well-run guest house, but with enough character and quiet elegance to make returning at the end of the day feel like part of the trip, not simply somewhere to sleep.

About the Property
Set in a former gentleman’s residence dating back to 1740, Sheriff Lodge feels settled, cared for and quietly confident. The position is a large part of its appeal: elevated above Matlock, with views towards Riber Castle, High Tor and Pic Tor, it offers a gentler, more spacious perspective on the town below. Inside, the mood is grown-up and restful, with individually styled rooms and a drawing room that encourages lingering over a book, map or drink after a day out. Breakfast is clearly taken seriously here, and the homemade afternoon teas add a welcome sense of occasion. This is an adults-only stay that suits walkers, weekenders and anyone who likes their Peak District base to feel both polished and personal.
Location
Matlock
Matlock makes an appealing base for the southern Peak District: lively enough to feel useful, yet close to some of Derbyshire’s most dramatic limestone scenery. The Derwent Valley gives the town its shape and views, while wooded heights and rocky outcrops rise around it. From here, days can drift between long walks, scenic drives and time spent in handsome market towns and historic houses. Bakewell, Chatsworth and Haddon Hall are all within easy reach, but Matlock itself has an unshowy charm that suits travellers who prefer a place with everyday life still intact.
