Why we love it

The appeal of The Gate is its sense of exhale: a place set just back from the shoreline, with wide views and an easy stillness that makes South East Cornwall feel softer, slower and more restorative. You come for the coast, but stay for that in-between feeling of being held by both country and sea.

About the Property

The Gate is a small, contemporary retreat on Cornwall’s south-east coast, thoughtfully shaped for guests who want to step out of the usual rhythm for a few days. There is a calm, pared-back feel throughout, softened by communal spaces that encourage you to linger rather than rush on. Mornings begin with far-reaching views and that particular clarity of coastal light; days drift easily between nearby coves, fishing villages and the quieter inland lanes. What makes a stay here distinctive is its balance: close enough to the sea for salt-air swims and cliff walks, yet with the settled atmosphere of a countryside hideaway. It suits couples especially well, and anyone looking for Cornwall without the noise.

Location

Talland Bay, near Looe and Polperro

This corner of South East Cornwall has a gentler mood than the county’s headline stretches. Talland Bay is all sheltered water, rock pools and painterly views, while Looe brings a working-harbour energy and Polperro keeps its old fishing-village character in its steep lanes and whitewashed cottages. Between them, the coast feels made for unhurried days: walking the cliff path, stopping for a swim, then returning inland as the light starts to lower over the fields. It is a part of Cornwall that rewards a slower pace, with sea and countryside never far apart.
